The death of a 20-year-old student from Assam after she went missing while travelling on the Kanyakumari–Dibrugarh Vivek Express has prompted a police investigation in Andhra Pradesh, with the circumstances surrounding her death still unclear.
Himashri Boro, a student of B Borooah College and a resident of Guwahati, had travelled to Visakhapatnam on September 30 as part of a dance troupe from Assam attending a programme. She was returning to Guwahati on train number 22503 when her family lost contact with her.
According to her family, Boro spoke to a friend at around 12.39am during the journey and reportedly said that some boys were bullying and misbehaving with her. The call was then disconnected, and her phone became unreachable. The family subsequently filed a missing person complaint, after which the Railway Protection Force and police began searching for her.
During the investigation, railway police recovered Boro’s luggage from the train’s S2 coach. Investigators have also collected CCTV footage and video footage showing her travelling on the train. The material is being examined as part of the inquiry into what happened after she was last heard from.
Railway police later recovered her body near a railway track in Andhra Pradesh and informed her family. The cause of death has not yet been established, and the available report does not state how she reached the location or what happened between her disappearance from the train and the recovery of her body.
Boro’s family, which is from Kamrup district, has approached Assam Police for assistance in the investigation. The involvement of authorities in both states reflects the interstate nature of the case, which began during a train journey from Visakhapatnam towards Guwahati and ended with the recovery of her body in Andhra Pradesh.
Former All Bodo Students’ Union president Dipen Boro has urged the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of Himashri’s death and ensure justice for her family. Police are expected to establish the sequence of events using the collected footage, railway records and other evidence as the investigation continues.
