The Assam cabinet has approved four bighas of land in the Palasbari revenue circle near Guwahati for the proposed Lovlina Boxing Academy, waiving the land premium and reducing it to a nominal Re 1, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday.
The decision clears the state government’s land-related approval for the academy, which is being established in honour of boxer Lovlina Borgohain. Sarma announced the cabinet decision on X, saying the government had “cleared the decks” for the facility.
According to the announcement, the land parcel measures four bighas and is located in Palasbari, an area near Guwahati. The cabinet’s decision covers the allotment of the plot and the waiver of the premium payable for it. The premium has been fixed at Re 1.
Sarma said the academy was intended to provide high-quality training for the next generation of boxers from Assam. “The next gen of Assam’s Lovlinas can get the best training and make the nation proud,” he said in his announcement.
The cabinet approval is an administrative step towards setting up the academy, but the information available does not specify the construction schedule, the agency that will build or operate the facility, the estimated project cost, or the number of athletes it is expected to serve. It also does not state when training operations are likely to begin.
The land decision places the proposed boxing academy within the state’s broader public sports infrastructure framework. By waiving the premium on the four-bigha plot, the government has reduced the immediate land cost associated with establishing the facility. The announcement, however, does not provide details of any additional financial commitment for construction, equipment, coaching, maintenance or athlete accommodation.
The location in the Palasbari revenue circle connects the project to the expanding urban region around Guwahati, although the cabinet announcement does not identify the exact site or describe its access arrangements. Information on road connectivity, public transport, utilities and other supporting infrastructure was not included in the details released with the decision.
The academy is named after Borgohain, who was described in the announcement as a recent Asian Games gold medal winner. The government’s stated objective is to create a facility where emerging boxers from Assam can receive advanced training and pursue national-level achievement.
The cabinet’s approval marks the immediate milestone announced by the state government. Further details on design, tendering, construction, funding and the academy’s operating model were not specified in the available announcement.
