A clash between residents of two neighbourhoods during Durga idol immersion in Arambag’s Satitala area on Wednesday night left several people injured, damaged some houses and led police to use a lathi charge to restore order, according to a report by Sangbad Pratidin – Bengal.
The confrontation took place between residents of Bandhpara and Bhumijpara, both of which organise Durga Puja celebrations in the area. The report said tensions began before the immersion procession, when residents of one neighbourhood were taking part in sindoor khela and dancing. A group of youths from the other neighbourhood allegedly joined the dancing, leading to an argument between residents.
The verbal dispute later escalated into a physical fight. The report said residents from both sides used sticks during the confrontation and that several houses were vandalised. Both groups have reportedly accused each other in connection with the incident.
A large police contingent reached the area under the leadership of the officer-in-charge of Arambag police station after the situation deteriorated.
