A low-pressure area is likely to form over the Andaman Sea by October 13 and may intensify into a depression over the southern and adjoining central Bay of Bengal by October 15, the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) said on Friday.
The system is expected to develop under the influence of a surface circulation forecast to emerge over the North Andaman Sea on October 12. APSDMA said the weather system could intensify as it moves over the Bay of Bengal, but cautioned that considerable uncertainty remains and that greater clarity is expected over the coming days.
The forecast is relevant to Andhra Pradesh’s coastal districts because the development of a depression in the Bay of Bengal can affect rainfall, thunderstorms and local preparedness requirements. The authority has not indicated any immediate large-scale disruption or issued a coastal evacuation order in the information available.
For Saturday, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rain are likely in Alluri Sitarama Raju and Polavaram districts, according to APSDMA. Other coastal districts may receive scattered light rain along with thunderstorms.
The authority advised residents to remain alert during thunderstorms and to follow official weather updates. The advisory places emphasis on monitoring conditions as the weather system develops, rather than treating the projected depression as a confirmed event.
The next key forecast milestone is the expected formation of the low-pressure area over the Andaman Sea by October 13. APSDMA said further updates would provide greater clarity on the system’s development and likely effects over Andhra Pradesh and the Bay of Bengal.
