Amul’s first modern dairy plant in Telangana will be inaugurated at Urji Industrial Park in Toopran, Medak district, on October 4, Union coal and mines minister G. Kishan Reddy announced, while Union Home and Cooperation minister Amit Shah is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the Sabar Dairy Project at the same event.
The plant is planned to process five lakh litres of milk a day and manufacture a wide range of dairy products, including 200 metric tonnes of curd, 30 kilolitres each of masala buttermilk, probiotic buttermilk and lassi, 10 metric tonnes of paneer and 50 kilolitres of ice-cream. Its proposed daily output will also include three metric tonnes of fresh sweets and five metric tonnes each of bakery products and ghee.
Kishan Reddy described the project as a major milestone for Telangana’s dairy sector. According to his statement, the facility is intended to strengthen milk processing, increase value addition and create more opportunities for farmers. The plant’s capacity can be expanded later, although no further capacity figures or expansion timeline were provided.
The project is being linked by the Union Cooperation Ministry to “White Revolution 2.0”, a programme launched on September 19, 2024, to expand dairy cooperatives and improve farmers’ access to markets. The programme targets a 50 per cent increase in milk procurement by 2028–29 and plans to establish 75,000 new cooperative societies across India, including 1,525 in Telangana.
The proposed facility places processing capacity at the centre of the state’s dairy development strategy. For milk producers, the significance of a large plant will depend on how procurement networks connect villages to the facility, how consistently milk is collected and how returns are distributed through the cooperative system. The announcement, however, did not provide details on the plant’s procurement catchment, investment value, employment potential or the number of farmers expected to supply it.
Kishan Reddy also said the National Cooperative Development Corporation had approved around ₹1.16 lakh crore for Telangana over the past 12 years, including nearly ₹60,000 crore for paddy procurement. Telangana has more than 60,000 cooperative societies, he said, adding that a stronger cooperative structure could raise farmers’ incomes and improve returns for agricultural produce.
The inauguration and foundation-stone ceremony will be held on October 4 at Urji Industrial Park in Toopran, where Shah is also scheduled to meet party leaders at the airport. Further project details are expected to emerge during the event.
