Amaravati Water Projects Get Push as 2027 Deadline Nears

Amaravati water projects under construction near the Krishna river in Andhra Pradesh

The Amaravati Development Corporation (ADC) has directed officials and contractors to accelerate drinking-water infrastructure in the capital region, including a 380 million litres per day (MLD) intake system, a 190 MLD treatment plant and seven water supply centres.

ADC chairperson and managing director D. Lakshmi Parthasarathi issued the directions during an inspection of ongoing drinking-water projects. The works are being developed to serve Amaravati’s projected population, with the ADC reviewing construction progress, manpower, machinery deployment and project targets.

At the Krishna river near Venkata Palem, Parthasarathi inspected intake well tanks with a combined capacity of 380 MLD. She sought a progress update from ADC chief engineer T. Moses Kumar and directed officials to speed up construction while maintaining quality standards.

The inspection was a follow-up to a visit conducted three months earlier. Parthasarathi instructed the chief engineer, superintending engineer, executive engineer, deputy executive engineer, assistant engineer and other officials to monitor the project sites daily. The directive places responsibility for progress tracking across the engineering hierarchy rather than limiting oversight to periodic reviews.

She also inspected the Phase-I water treatment plant being constructed at Krishnayapalem village. The plant will treat water drawn from the Krishna river intake before it is supplied to residents and has a capacity of 190 MLD. The intake and treatment capacities form the main supply chain for converting the river water into treated drinking water for the capital region.

The ADC is constructing seven water supply centres in Amaravati. During the inspection, Parthasarathi reviewed a cushion tank being built for a 2,400-kilolitre water distribution plant near the N-4 road. The tank is intended to support distribution infrastructure as treated water moves through the planned network.

Representatives of the NCC contractor were directed to achieve the project targets by May 2027. The deadline covers the works reviewed during the inspection, although the report does not specify separate completion dates for the intake wells, treatment plant, cushion tank or each of the seven supply centres.

The inspection also covered works in LPS Zones 9 and 12 along the route. ADC chief engineer Ch. Dhanunjaya, superintending engineers T. Vaikuntha Rao and R. Hanumantha Reddy, and executive engineers M. Sridhar Reddy, N. Sivalinga Rao and Y. Appaji were present during the review. Daily monitoring and progress against the May 2027 targets are the next stated steps for the project.
