Ahmedabad police have arrested a key accused allegedly linked to the Sikligar gang and said they have solved eight theft cases registered in the city, including cases in Ramol, Vatva GIDC and Amraiwadi. The arrest was made during Operation Hunt, a drive targeting wanted accused involved in offences against people and property.
The Local Crime Branch Zone 8 team arrested Shersing alias Sheru Kalusing Telpitiya near Vadu lake in Ramol village based on information received during the investigation, Gujarat Samachar – Ahmedabad reported. Police said the accused is a native of Khambhat and allegedly operated the gang while guiding other members in carrying out thefts.
According to the report, the accused and three associates allegedly travelled in an expensive car to conduct reconnaissance of locked houses, shops and warehouses. After identifying a target, gang members allegedly stole motorcycles from nearby areas and used them to reach the location at night. Police said they broke locks and stole cash and jewellery before abandoning the stolen motorcycles in isolated places and escaping in their original car.
The police investigation resulted in the recovery of property linked to the cases, although the source report did not provide a detailed list or value of the recovered items. The eight cases were registered across Ramol, Vatva GIDC and Amraiwadi police stations, according to the report.
Police have also said that more than 30 cases have been registered against the gang across Gujarat. The accused had previously come to the notice of police in connection with theft and robbery cases in Vadodara, Nadiad, Ambaliyara, Jetpur and Balasinor, the report said. These details remain part of the police case record and further investigation.
The operation has also placed attention on the way organised property theft can use ordinary urban infrastructure and movement patterns to avoid detection. In the account provided by police, the gang used one vehicle for mobility and reconnaissance, locally stolen motorcycles for the actual offences, and abandoned locations to separate the stolen vehicles from the accused. The alleged method involved targeting properties that were closed at night, including homes, shops and storage premises.
Police are continuing the search for the other alleged associates and investigating the gang’s links to additional cases across the state. The next stage of the investigation will establish the identities and roles of other suspects, verify the property recovered and determine how many of the cases registered in Gujarat can be connected to the arrested accused.
