A roughly two-kilometre stretch of Ahmedabad’s SG Highway between the YMCA Club and Karnavati Club has been reopened to vehicles ahead of Navratri, easing a traffic bottleneck created by ongoing overbridge construction, Sandesh reported on October 9.
The road had remained closed for some time while construction work was carried out on the overbridge. The closure forced vehicles to use alternate routes and contributed to regular congestion in one of Ahmedabad’s busiest corridors, affecting commuters and residents in the surrounding area.
According to the report, the decision to reopen the road was taken before the festival season to improve movement for citizens. The overbridge project has now reached its final stage, allowing the section between the two clubs to be returned to traffic even though the broader construction work is still nearing completion.
The reopened stretch is expected to be particularly significant during Navratri, when SG Highway and Club Road experience increased traffic linked to garba events. The corridor is used by people travelling to and from venues in the area, including late-night journeys during the festival period. Returning the road to traffic before the celebrations is intended to reduce the pressure caused by the earlier diversion.
The closure had affected more than ordinary peak-hour commuting. With a two-kilometre section unavailable, vehicles approaching the YMCA Club and Karnavati Club area had faced delays and congestion. The reopening restores direct movement along the corridor and is expected to reduce travel disruption for motorists using the route.
The report said the move has brought relief to vehicle users and local residents, while also benefiting people attending garba events. It did not provide details of the overbridge’s total cost, contractor, revised completion date or the traffic-management arrangements that will remain in place around the construction site.
The reopening also means that road users will continue to share the area with ongoing infrastructure work until the overbridge is fully completed. The next formal milestone is the completion of the remaining construction, after which the corridor’s final traffic arrangements can be established.
