A key stretch of Ahmedabad’s SG Highway connecting YMCA Cross Road, Prahladnagar and Karnavati Club has been reopened to traffic after remaining closed for about 14 months, easing a diversion that had added roughly 3 km and 15 to 20 minutes to daily journeys for commuters.
The road beneath the bridge from YMCA Cross Road towards Karnavati Club was closed in August 2025 while work was being carried out on the corridor. During the closure, vehicles travelling from Sarkhej towards Gandhinagar or Prahladnagar were diverted through Bhagwan Circle and Zaveri Circle before reaching the Karnavati Club side.
The reopening took place shortly before the Navratri festival, providing relief to motorists expected to travel through the corridor during the festive period. The route is used by commuters travelling between the SG Highway, Prahladnagar and adjoining parts of western Ahmedabad.
According to the report, the diversion forced motorists to travel approximately 3 km farther each day. The additional route increased congestion and caused an estimated 15 to 20 minutes of extra travel time for affected users. The extended closure had particularly affected regular commuters using YMCA Cross Road as a direct connection towards Prahladnagar and Karnavati Club.
The National Highways Authority of India had earlier indicated that work on the wider SG Highway corridor would be completed in stages. An NHAI official said the agency had discussed opening the Karnavati bridge with the police commissioner and that the police team had visited the site. The official had said the work was expected to be almost complete by October 15 and that the upper bridge could be opened to traffic by October 30 if required.
The earlier schedule included finishing activities such as lighting, table checking, thermoplastic road painting and road furniture. The official also said that potholes below the bridge would be filled as part of the remaining work. These activities were expected to continue through the end of October, even as the road beneath the bridge has now been opened for vehicles.
The reopening restores a direct movement route at a busy interchange where a temporary diversion had shifted traffic onto neighbouring junctions. The immediate effect is a shorter route for motorists heading between YMCA Cross Road, Prahladnagar and Karnavati Club, while the remaining bridge-related work and road-surface improvements are expected to proceed according to the stated schedule.
