Ahmedabad Road Widening Displaces Residents Near Narendra Modi Stadium

Ahmedabad road widening demolition near Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has begun demolishing around 75 residential properties along the route from the Sabarmati toll naka to Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, as part of a project to widen the road from 18 metres to 61 metres. The drive is linked to planned development around the stadium ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth event, according to the AMC’s western zone estate department as reported by Divya Bhaskar.

The affected stretch runs from the Sabarmati toll naka towards Narendra Modi Stadium, including the road opposite D-Mart. The corporation is implementing the widening under a revised development plan road alignment. The wider corridor is expected to include more than 100 residential properties, while the overall stretch has more than 165 commercial and residential properties within the affected area.

The AMC had previously issued notices to affected property holders before beginning the demolition work. Around 66 commercial properties on the same stretch had already been demolished, the report said. The latest action has focused on residential properties in the Sabarmati ward and Motera area.

The corporation said alternative arrangements were being made for affected residents. People who submitted proof of residence were provided rent cheques until alternative homes could be allotted. According to the report, 66 residents accepted the rent cheques issued by the civic body. The AMC said houses would be allotted as an alternative arrangement, although the report did not specify the number, location or handover schedule of those homes.

Residents who could not provide residential proof were not provided alternative accommodation by the corporation, according to the report. This distinction has affected the relocation process, with eligibility for assistance tied to the documents submitted by residents.

Most of the affected residential properties had been vacated before the demolition, the report said. However, some occupants had not cleared their homes when the civic operation began on the morning of October 13. They were made to vacate during the operation, and some residents placed their belongings on the footpath because they did not have another place to stay immediately.

The project is being carried out as the city works to develop the Narendra Modi Stadium and its surrounding area. The road widening will create a significantly broader corridor than the existing 18-metre road, but the current demolition phase has also created an immediate relocation requirement for residents whose homes fall within the revised alignment.

The AMC’s western zone estate department is responsible for the demolition and related property-clearance action. The corporation’s stated next steps are to continue providing interim rent support where residential proof has been accepted and allot alternative houses to affected residents. The report did not provide a completion date for the road widening or a timeline for the allotment of all replacement homes.
