Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has demolished about 75 residential properties along the road from the Sabarmati toll naka to Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera as part of a project to widen the route to 61 metres, Divya Bhaskar reported on October 13. The demolition is linked to planned development around the stadium ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth event.
The affected road falls within the Sabarmati ward and is being redeveloped under a town planning road alignment. The existing 18-metre road is being expanded to 61 metres under a revised development plan, according to the report, which cited the AMC western zone estate department.
More than 100 residential homes were located along the stretch identified for widening. The report said demolition work had been carried out against 75 homes, while the wider road project affects more than 165 commercial and residential properties. Earlier, 66 commercial properties had been demolished as part of the same road-widening process.
The AMC had issued notices to affected property owners before the demolition drive. Most residents had vacated their homes, but some properties were still occupied when the operation began on the morning of October 13. Those residents were made to leave, and the report said some of their belongings were placed on the footpath because alternative accommodation had not yet been arranged.
The civic body has said affected residents will be provided with alternative homes. Until those homes are allotted, eligible residents are being given rent cheques. Divya Bhaskar reported that 66 people who submitted proof of residence had accepted the rent cheques. Residents unable to provide the required documents had not been given alternative homes, according to the report.
The compensation and relocation process therefore remains tied to documentation submitted by residents. The report did not specify the amount of rent support, the number of alternative homes available, or the timeline for allotment. It also did not provide details of the final road design, construction schedule or the expected date for completion of the widening work.
The demolition is taking place on a strategically important approach road to Narendra Modi Stadium, one of the major venues in the Motera area. The AMC’s immediate steps, as reported, are to continue removing properties falling within the road alignment, provide rent assistance to eligible affected residents and allot alternative accommodation where applicable.
