More than 100 young people from Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar were detained before they could travel to Delhi for a protest, according to a report by Divya Bhaskar, as police increased checks at railway stations and bus terminals across Gujarat.
The reported detentions came amid protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Divya Bhaskar reported that opposition groups and the CJP had intensified nationwide demonstrations and that young people, particularly members of Generation Z, were travelling from different parts of the country to participate in the Delhi mobilisation.
According to the report, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch, Special Operations Group and Special Branch jointly carried out an operation to prevent activists and young people from reaching Delhi from Gujarat. Police reportedly monitored trains heading towards the capital as well as private and state-run buses, with additional checking deployed at railway stations and major bus stands.
The report also said that senior officials from the Home Department and police held a meeting in Gandhinagar late on Friday to review the law-and-order situation. The meeting focused on preventing any untoward incident in the state and preparing the administration’s next response, according to Divya Bhaskar.
The reported police action has also shifted attention to Ahmedabad, where young people unable to travel to Delhi may gather for a protest. Divya Bhaskar said police expected that other participants could assemble near Ellisbridge on Saturday. The report cited an earlier instance in which more than 1,000 young people gathered within two hours for a protest, prompting the police to prepare for a possible fresh mobilisation.
Additional police personnel were reportedly scheduled to be deployed from early Saturday at sensitive locations in western Ahmedabad. The deployment follows the reported detention of more than 100 people and the possibility of a local demonstration by those who could not join the Delhi protest.
The report did not provide details on the legal provisions under which the young people were detained, the duration of their detention or whether they were subsequently released. It also did not identify the organisers of the reported Ahmedabad gathering. The immediate next step described in the report is the deployment of additional police personnel and continued monitoring of transport points and sensitive locations.
