An Ahmedabad police constable has been booked under the Gujarat Prohibition Act after police found him allegedly intoxicated at his home while investigating a woman’s complaint that he had harassed her, according to a report by Gujarat Samachar – Ahmedabad.
The constable, identified as Parbatbhai Mafabhai Rabari, is posted at Shaherkotda Police Station as an unarmed police constable. The report said a woman had approached the police with a complaint that Rabari was harassing her. The nature and outcome of that complaint were not detailed in the supplied report.
The incident took place after the police inspector at Shaherkotda Police Station directed staff to contact Rabari on his mobile phone. He reportedly did not answer the calls. Following the inspector’s instructions, a team including a police sub-inspector went to Rabari’s residence at Navrang Flat in Naroda at about 11pm on October 8.
The police team found Rabari at home in an allegedly intoxicated condition, the report said. The matter was conveyed to the police inspector, after which Rabari was taken to Naroda Police Station under instructions from senior staff.
At the Naroda station compound, Rabari was allegedly seen speaking with slurred speech and stumbling. The Naroda police subsequently registered a case against him under provisions of the Gujarat Prohibition Act in connection with the alleged consumption of alcohol.
The report links the police action to two separate issues raised during the incident: the woman’s complaint of harassment and the constable’s alleged violation of Gujarat’s prohibition law. The supplied report does not state whether a separate departmental inquiry has been opened against Rabari, whether he has been suspended, or what further action will be taken on the harassment complaint.
The case places attention on the accountability mechanisms within city police stations, where complaints against serving personnel are initially handled by the same institutional system to which they belong. In this instance, the report said the Shaherkotda police team acted after the constable failed to respond to calls and visited his residence on the police inspector’s direction.
The prohibition case will now proceed through the legal process. The supplied report does not provide details of Rabari’s arrest status, medical examination, bail proceedings or the next scheduled court action.
