Ahmedabad Parking Charges Set to Rise Under AMC Proposal

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has proposed raising parking charges across the city, with the revised rates varying by vehicle type, parking location, zone and traffic density. If approved and implemented, two-wheeler users could pay up to Rs 20 for the first hour at some locations, while the proposed first-hour charge for cars could rise to Rs 40.

The proposed revision seeks to replace parking rates set in 2015–16. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has prepared different rates for parking sites based on their location, zone, vehicle category and traffic congestion, according to a report by Sandesh.

At present, the first-hour parking charge is Rs 5 for two-wheelers and Rs 15 for cars. The current rates for medium commercial vehicles and heavy commercial vehicles are Rs 50 and Rs 75 respectively. The proposed system would mean that motorists pay more depending on where they park and how long they keep their vehicles there.

For multilevel and on-street parking, the proposal suggests common rates. The proposed first-hour charge is Rs 10 for two-wheelers, Rs 20 for cars, Rs 15 for three-wheelers and Rs 50 for light commercial vehicles. The proposal lists a charge of Rs 70 for medium commercial vehicles and Rs 100 for heavy commercial vehicles.

The proposed rates for general on-street and underbridge parking would differ by zone. In the Central, North-West, South-West and West zones, the proposed first-hour charge is Rs 15 for two-wheelers and Rs 30 for cars. In the East, North and South zones, the corresponding proposed rates are Rs 10 for two-wheelers and Rs 20 for cars.

The zone-wise structure indicates that the corporation is seeking to link parking charges to the location and demand for parking rather than applying one city-wide rate. The proposal also distinguishes between parking formats, including multilevel facilities, on-street spaces and underbridge parking, while setting separate charges for commercial vehicles.

For residents, the immediate change is not an implemented fee revision but a proposal that could alter the cost of short-term parking across Ahmedabad. The final rates, their effective date and the locations where they would apply will depend on the corporation’s decision on the proposal. Until implementation is formally announced, the existing rates remain the applicable charges described in the report.
