Ahmedabad Parking Charges May Rise Fourfold Under AMC Proposal

Ahmedabad parking area with cars and two-wheelers under proposed higher parking charges

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is preparing to revise parking charges across the city, with proposed rates rising to Rs 20 per hour for two-wheelers and Rs 40 for cars in high-density traffic-demand areas. The proposal, reported on October 10, remains subject to approval by the civic body’s committees and General Board before it can take effect.

The proposed rates would replace charges fixed in 2015-16. The new structure is designed to vary according to the type of parking facility, traffic density, zone and duration of parking. Under the proposal, a two-wheeler parked in a multilevel or off-street facility would cost Rs 10 for the first hour, compared with the current Rs 5. The first-hour charge for a car would rise from Rs 15 to between Rs 20 and Rs 40, depending on the location.

The highest rates are proposed for high-density traffic-demand areas. In these locations, the first-hour charge would be Rs 20 for a two-wheeler and Rs 40 for a car. Parking for one to three hours would cost Rs 40 and Rs 80 respectively, while three to six hours would cost Rs 60 for a two-wheeler and Rs 120 for a car.

For parking lasting six to 12 hours in high-density areas, the proposed rates are Rs 80 for two-wheelers and Rs 160 for cars. A 12-to-24-hour stay would cost Rs 100 for a two-wheeler and Rs 250 for a car. These rates represent the sharpest increase in the proposed schedule and would apply only in areas designated as high-density traffic-demand zones.

The proposal also sets different rates for ordinary on-street and underbridge parking. In the central, north-western, south-western and western zones, the first-hour charges proposed for two-wheelers and cars are Rs 15 and Rs 30. In the eastern, northern and southern zones, the corresponding rates would be Rs 10 and Rs 20.

For multilevel and off-street parking, the proposed charges for one to three hours are Rs 20 for two-wheelers and Rs 40 for cars. Parking for three to six hours would cost Rs 35 and Rs 80, while six to 12 hours would cost Rs 50 and Rs 120. For 12 to 24 hours, the proposed rates are Rs 70 for two-wheelers and Rs 170 for cars.

The proposed schedule also introduces separate rates for three-wheelers and light commercial vehicles. At present, three-wheelers are charged at the four-wheeler rate, while light commercial vehicles are charged at the medium commercial vehicle rate. Under the new proposal, a three-wheeler would pay Rs 15 per hour in multilevel and off-street parking, while a light commercial vehicle would pay Rs 50. In ordinary on-street parking, the proposed rates would vary by zone.

Commercial vehicle charges would also increase with parking duration. In high-density areas, parking for 12 to 24 hours is proposed to cost Rs 600 for a medium commercial vehicle and Rs 900 for a heavy commercial vehicle. In multilevel and off-street facilities, the corresponding rates would be Rs 400 and Rs 600.

The authority to identify high-density traffic-demand areas would be assigned to the Deputy Municipal Commissioner of the relevant zone. The locations could be designated periodically based on parking requirements. On-street parking proposals would also require a no-objection certificate from the traffic police.

The proposal will first be placed before the Town Planning Committee and then the Standing Committee. It will subsequently require approval from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation General Board. The revised charges will be implemented only after the General Board grants approval; the proposed rates are not currently in force.
