A 27-year-old construction worker died after a boundary wall collapsed on him during soil-filling work near a building under construction inside the LG Hospital compound in Ahmedabad’s Maninagar area on Tuesday morning, according to a report by Nav Gujarat Samay – Ahmedabad.
The worker, identified as Chhutan Shukrumar Mandal, was seriously injured after the wall fell on him at about 9 am. He was taken to the intensive care unit at LG Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 11:05 am during treatment.
Mandal was originally from Yadpur in West Bengal’s Malda district and had been living inside the LG Hospital compound while working as a labourer. The report said he was carrying out masonry work at the old LG Hospital compound when the incident occurred.
According to the report, soil-filling work was under way beside the building being constructed. The pressure on the adjoining wall reportedly increased during the work, after which the structure suddenly collapsed on Mandal. He suffered serious injuries and became unconscious at the site.
A co-worker identified as Krishna took Mandal to the hospital’s ICU ward at around 9:20 am. The hospital later informed its police outpost about the death. Following the notification, Assistant Sub-Inspector Rajeshbhai of the Maninagar police station reached the site.
The Maninagar police have registered a case of accidental death in connection with the incident. The police response will establish the circumstances surrounding the collapse, including the work being carried out near the wall and the conditions at the construction site. The report did not provide details of any arrests or action against a contractor or other agency.
The death occurred within an operational hospital compound where construction and other work were taking place alongside hospital services. The incident has therefore brought attention to the need for safety controls around construction activity, temporary works and adjoining structures in active public facilities. Further official details are expected as the police record and inquiry progress.
