Ahmedabad police will bar heavy vehicles and passenger vehicles carrying more than 33 people from entering the city between 8am and 2am every day from October 11 to October 21, as authorities prepare for increased traffic during Navratri and Dussehra.
The restriction has been imposed through a notification issued by the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner to maintain traffic movement and help prevent road accidents during the festival period. The order will apply across the Police Commissionerate area and will remain in force until 2am on October 21, 2026.
The notification covers goods vehicles weighing more than 7,500 kg, passenger vehicles, tractor-trolleys and buses with a capacity of more than 33 passengers. The restrictions will operate from 8am until 2am each day during the notified period, extending the hours prescribed under earlier traffic orders.
Under the previous arrangements cited in the notification, goods vehicles weighing more than 7,500 kg, passenger vehicles and tractor-trolleys were restricted from 8am to 11pm. Buses carrying more than 33 passengers faced restrictions from 8am to 10pm. The festival-related order extends the restriction window to 2am to cover the late-night movement associated with Navratri and Dussehra events.
The order is significant for Ahmedabad’s road network because the festival period combines extended evening activity with the movement of large numbers of people. Restricting heavy vehicles during these hours is intended to reduce interaction between freight traffic, large passenger vehicles and festival-related road use. The notification, however, does not specify in the supplied material which categories of vehicles may receive exemptions or the routes that will be used for permitted movement.
The police have warned that drivers who violate the notification will face legal action. The order authorises police personnel across ranks, from joint and additional commissioners of police to constables, to register cases against drivers found breaching the restrictions.
The restrictions will automatically end at 2am on October 21, after which the earlier regular traffic notifications will come back into force. The police notification therefore creates a temporary festival-period control rather than a permanent change to Ahmedabad’s heavy-vehicle movement rules.
