Ahmedabad Heatwave Nears 40°C as Rain Forecast for October 19

Ahmedabad heatwave conditions with residents navigating a hot city street under harsh October sunlight.

Ahmedabad is facing unusually high October temperatures, with the mercury reaching 38.2°C as dry north-westerly winds push maximum temperatures across Gujarat close to 40°C. The India Meteorological Department has forecast the possibility of scattered rain in parts of South Gujarat and Saurashtra on October 19 because of an active trough.

According to a report by Sandesh, Deesa recorded the state’s highest temperature at 40.2°C, followed by Bhuj at 40°C. Rajkot recorded 39.5°C, Surendranagar 39.3°C, Naliya 38.6°C and Keshod 38.3°C. Temperatures crossed 38°C in seven cities across the state.

In Ahmedabad, both daytime and night-time temperatures were reported to be around 2.5°C above normal. The high daytime temperature has brought summer-like conditions to the city even as the monsoon season has withdrawn and winter has yet to begin. The report said residents have experienced intense heat during afternoon hours over the past several days.

The latest Ahmedabad reading also places October’s heat among the city’s more notable recent temperature events. The report described the 38.2°C maximum as the highest October temperature recorded in Ahmedabad in nine years. It also noted that 38.4°C was recorded on October 6, 2017, while the city’s highest recorded October temperature was 42.8°C on October 5, 1920.

The temperature pattern is linked in the report to dry north-westerly winds over Gujarat. Such conditions have contributed to the sharp rise in maximum temperatures across cities in the state, producing heat more commonly associated with the summer months. The elevated night-time temperature in Ahmedabad also indicates that the city is experiencing above-normal warmth beyond the afternoon peak.

The weather department’s forecast points to a possible change from the current dry spell later in the month. An active trough is expected to create conditions favourable for scattered rain on October 19, particularly in Amreli, Bhavnagar, Valsad, Navsari, Daman and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The forecast concerns isolated locations in these areas rather than a statewide rainfall event.

For Ahmedabad residents, the immediate weather picture remains one of high daytime heat, while the forecast rain is currently focused on parts of South Gujarat and Saurashtra. The report does not indicate a specific rainfall forecast for Ahmedabad on October 19. The weather department’s next forecast updates will determine whether the expected trough produces rain in the identified districts and whether temperatures ease across the state.
