Ahmedabad Garba Dome Collapses Before Navratri, Worker Injured

Collapsed Ahmedabad garba dome at a temporary Navratri event venue in Makarba

An air-conditioned dome being installed for singer Kirtidan Gadhvi’s ‘Parampara’ Navratri event collapsed at Gopal Farm near Ahmedabad’s S.P. Ring Road on October 9, injuring at least one worker and putting the event schedule under scrutiny ahead of its planned start on October 11.

The dome in Makarba had reportedly taken two months to build and was substantially complete, with lighting and other event infrastructure installed. Workers were still carrying out tasks inside the structure when one side suddenly gave way. The report said some workers suffered minor injuries, while one person was taken for medical treatment.

Fire station officer Vishnu Desai said the fire department team reached the venue after being informed about the collapse. No one was found trapped under the structure, he said, adding that one person had sustained a minor injury.

Desai said one side of the temporary dome had completely sunk. He also explained that the structure had not received the final approval required for the event because the work was not complete. An online application had been submitted for the temporary structure, but approval had not been issued at the time of the collapse.

According to the fire officer, the department can issue a fire-safety certificate only after the work is completed. The number and location of entry and exit gates also need to be assessed before a fire No-Objection Certificate is issued. These details are important for evaluating evacuation arrangements at a temporary venue expected to host large crowds during Navratri.

Desai said organisers are required to provide a written undertaking on a Rs 300 stamp paper confirming compliance with fire-safety rules. He said a fire NOC is not issued without this process. The statement indicates that the venue’s regulatory clearance remained incomplete when the dome collapsed.

The incident occurred two days before the scheduled start of the Navratri programme. The report did not provide an official decision on whether the event would begin as planned, nor did it state whether the collapsed structure would be rebuilt or replaced. The venue’s final safety clearance and arrangements for entry and exit are therefore yet to be established.

The event is expected to feature Kirtidan Gadhvi and other performers during Ahmedabad’s Navratri season. Any decision on the programme will depend on the completion of the temporary structure and the issuance of the required fire-safety approvals.
