The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s West Zone carried out a coordinated demolition drive across Paldi, Naranpura, Ranip and Nava Vadaj, removing more than 60 structures, six commercial shops, 19 shanties and a concrete ramp from roads and reserved municipal land.
According to a report by the Times of India, the civic body’s estate department conducted the operations on Friday to clear traffic corridors and secure land reserved under town-planning schemes. The drive covered both temporary and permanent structures occupying public roads and plots.
In Paldi, municipal teams demolished more than 60 temporary and permanent structures along a 12-metre Town Planning road leading towards Shreyas Metro Station near Ganesh Awas Yojana. The road was identified as a key route requiring clearance to improve movement in the area.
The civic body also removed six commercial shops in Naranpura. The shops stood on a reserved final plot under Town Planning Scheme 29 at Ranna Park. The operation allowed the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to take official possession of the site, according to the report.
In Ranip, teams removed 19 shanties from a reserved plot under Town Planning Scheme 66. The civic body stated that it had secured official possession of the Ranip site as well as the reserved plot in Naranpura. The two operations involved land earmarked through the town-planning framework rather than ordinary roadside clearance alone.
The operation extended to Nava Vadaj, where municipal personnel dismantled a permanent concrete ramp obstructing an 18-metre-wide arterial road between Shantaram Hall and Nirnaynagar. The removal was aimed at restoring the full usable width of the road and addressing an obstruction on a major east-west connection in the area.
The West Zone’s action links three recurring municipal functions: removing obstructions from transport corridors, recovering land reserved for public purposes and securing physical possession of plots after clearance. In Paldi and Nava Vadaj, the immediate focus was on road width and movement. In Naranpura and Ranip, the operation centred on reserved land under notified town-planning schemes.
Municipal officials said the coordinated drives were intended to ease traffic bottlenecks, restore smoother public transit and recover valuable public property. The report did not specify whether rehabilitation or alternative arrangements had been provided for the occupants of the removed shanties, nor did it provide details of any further construction or public facilities planned on the reclaimed plots.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s next stated step is to retain official possession of the cleared sites and restore access along the affected roads. The civic body’s operations covered the 12-metre road in Paldi, the 18-metre arterial road in Nava Vadaj and the reserved plots in Naranpura and Ranip.
