Ahmedabad Boating May Resume After 2.5-Year Safety Halt

Ahmedabad boating services at Kankaria Lake and the Sabarmati Riverfront could resume soon, nearly two and a half years after they were suspended following the Harni Lake boat tragedy in Vadodara, according to a report by Gujarat Samachar – Ahmedabad. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has said the licensing and permission process is in its final stage, with a commissioner-level meeting scheduled for October 16.

Boating at Kankaria Lake and the Sabarmati Riverfront was stopped after the Vadodara incident led authorities to halt boating operations across Gujarat. The prolonged suspension has affected boat operators who depended on the services for their income, as well as visitors who used boating as one of the principal recreational attractions at the lakefront and riverfront.

The report describes a boat operator at Kankaria Lake worshipping his parked boat every morning while waiting for operations to restart. The act, according to the report, reflects the uncertainty faced by operators whose boats have remained unused for months. The suspension has also reduced one of the activities associated with Kankaria Lake, a major public recreation destination in Ahmedabad.

According to information attributed to AMC officials, boat operators have completed the required modifications under the administration’s revised guidelines. Closed-circuit television cameras have reportedly been installed across the lakefront for closer surveillance, while a dedicated control centre has been prepared for real-time monitoring.

The report also states that boat inspections and checks of safety equipment have been completed. However, these steps have not yet resulted in a final operating approval. The remaining process involves licensing and permissions from the civic administration, with the final decision expected at the commissioner level.

The distinction between completing safety compliance and receiving permission is central to the reopening process. While the reported inspections, safety equipment checks and monitoring arrangements indicate that operational requirements have been addressed, boating cannot restart until the municipal authority grants formal approval.

The suspension has created a wider administrative question for public leisure infrastructure: how should civic bodies restore services after a safety incident while ensuring that new operating and monitoring requirements are actually enforceable? In Ahmedabad’s case, the delay has affected both a public amenity and the livelihoods linked to it, while the municipality has continued to maintain and develop its lakefront and riverfront spaces.

The AMC meeting scheduled for October 16 is expected to consider whether final permission can be issued for boating at Kankaria Lake. If commissioner-level approval is granted, the service could resume after the licensing process is completed. Until that decision is recorded, the reported reopening remains conditional rather than confirmed.
