Delhi Police’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations unit is examining a viral video that allegedly shows social media influencer Amir Shokeen subjecting a youth from Tripura to racial abuse and humiliation, after a formal complaint sought investigation and preservation of digital evidence.
Shokeen has apologised in videos posted online, saying the content was intended as a joke and claiming that it was scripted. He said he had deleted the video and sought forgiveness from people in Tripura and Tripura chief minister Manik Saha. He also said he had made more than 2,000 videos without intending to hurt any community.
The video allegedly showed the youth being addressed with racial slurs, including a reference to him as “Chinese”, and being humiliated in public. The Times of India report did not establish the identity of the youth or provide an independent account from him.
Delhi Police’s Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region has formally written to the IFSO unit, asking it to investigate the viral clip, officials said. The Tripura Students Forum Delhi submitted a complaint dated October 21 to the joint commissioner of police, SPUNER, seeking an urgent and impartial inquiry.
The forum alleged that the video depicted a person from Tripura being subjected to sexual assault, harassment and humiliating treatment by a social media content creator. It identified the Instagram account @amirshoksen as allegedly linked to the incident and requested verification of the account operator’s identity and role, along with that of any other people who may have participated in or recorded the alleged incident.
The complaint also asked police to preserve the original recording, metadata, account details and upload history. It sought steps to prevent further harassment or intimidation of the youth and requested registration of a first information report wherever warranted by the facts and applicable legal provisions.
The incident has drawn demands for action from political leaders in Tripura and at the Union level. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the accused would face action and that Delhi and Tripura Police would take the matter forward. “This evil man will be punished,” Rijiju said in a post on X, adding that there had been a delay in lodging the official complaint.
Tripura chief minister Manik Saha had earlier directed the state’s director general of police to coordinate with Delhi Police. Leaders across party lines in Tripura have also condemned the alleged conduct and demanded legal action.
The case places the focus on how Delhi’s police and cyber-investigation systems handle viral content involving alleged discrimination, harassment and the possible circulation of identifying digital evidence. At this stage, the allegations remain under examination, and the available report does not record the outcome of the IFSO inquiry or confirm whether an FIR has been registered.
The IFSO unit is continuing its examination of the matter. Further details of the investigation and any police action are awaited.
