A 30-year-old woman was found dead inside her rented flat in Guwahati’s Hengrabari area on Tuesday, with police recovering a note that mentioned a colleague and detaining him for questioning. The woman’s family has suspected foul play, while investigators are awaiting the post-mortem report before determining the circumstances of her death.
The deceased was identified as Dolly Kashyap, a resident of Sualkuchi who worked for an insurance company. A police officer from Dispur police station said there were no visible injury marks on her body when officers reached the flat.
The incident came to light after the apartment owner visited Kashyap’s residence and received no response. The owner reportedly noticed a foul smell coming from inside the flat and alerted the police. A team from Dispur police station then arrived at the property and began the investigation.
According to the police, a note found inside the flat mentioned Biswanath Das, a resident of Purulia district in West Bengal. Das and Kashyap worked at the same company’s Guwahati branch. Police detained Das and are questioning him, but have not stated that he has been arrested or formally accused of causing her death.
“We found a suicide note from her flat. Currently, an investigation is going on and we have detained some people for questioning,” the police officer said. The officer added that Kashyap’s body had been sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination and that investigators were waiting for the results.
The post-mortem is expected to provide forensic evidence relevant to the investigation, including the cause and manner of death. Until those findings are available, police have not publicly established whether the death was suicide, homicide or linked to any other circumstance.
A relative told the media that Kashyap had spoken to her family by phone on Saturday and was expected to return home on Sunday to celebrate puja with them. The family was unable to contact her despite making several attempts, the relative said.
The family has called for a thorough investigation and raised suspicions of foul play. Their concerns are now part of the police inquiry, alongside the note recovered from the flat, the questioning of people connected to the case and the pending medical examination.
Police have not announced further details about the investigation or indicated when the post-mortem findings will be released. The next steps will depend on the report and the evidence gathered during questioning and the examination of the rented premises.
