A seven-year-old boy riding a bicycle died after being hit by an SUV on an internal road in Gandhinagar’s Sector 5B on Tuesday afternoon, with police arresting the vehicle’s driver and investigating the circumstances of the collision.
The child, identified as Devansh Kadvatar, was riding near the Mahakali temple after returning home from a school examination when the accident occurred. According to a complaint filed by his father, Rakesh, the SUV was being driven by their neighbour, Ghanshyamsinh Chauhan, who allegedly drove negligently and at speed before striking the bicycle.
The complaint states that Devansh fell to the ground after the impact and that one of the SUV’s tyres ran over his head. Chauhan took the injured child to Gandhinagar Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 12.46pm, according to the police complaint.
Rakesh, 39, told police that Devansh had returned from Radiant School of Science in Sargasan at around 12.30pm after appearing for a Class II examination. The boy then took his bicycle out and was travelling towards home when the SUV hit him in front of a residential plot, the complaint alleged.
Rakesh, who works as a contractual peon at the taluka panchayat office in Sector 11, said he learnt about the accident through a neighbour’s phone call. He rushed to the civil hospital, where he was informed that his son had died. Devansh lived with his parents and grandparents.
The Sector 7 police have arrested Chauhan and initiated legal proceedings. Investigators are examining the sequence of events on the internal road, the allegations regarding the SUV’s speed and manner of driving, and the circumstances leading to the fatal collision. Further action will follow the investigation and the evidence collected by police.
