Delhi Police Seeks X Data Over False IPS Resignation Posts

Delhi Police misinformation investigation involving social-media posts about IPS officer Sumit Jha

Delhi Police has written to social-media platform X seeking information about accounts that circulated misleading claims that IPS officer Sumit Jha had resigned during protests by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), according to a senior police officer quoted in the report.

The police are seeking the Internet Protocol addresses linked to the accounts to establish whether they were operated from Pakistan, the officer said. The posts were attributed to an individual identified as Syed Chaudhary and claimed that Jha, who serves as staff officer to the Delhi Police Commissioner, had stepped down.

The claims were allegedly circulated during CJP protests held in October. Police officials said similar allegations had also surfaced during an earlier round of protests in July. The misleading content was uploaded on Facebook, Instagram and X, after which the police raised the matter with the platforms.

The latest complaint follows a clarification issued by Delhi Police on X during the July protests. The police had described a viral video claiming that Jha had resigned because of student protests as fake and AI-generated. The department also shared an authentic video of the officer speaking to the public about misinformation campaigns and appealed to users not to forward the edited clip.

The incident highlights the operational challenge faced by law-enforcement agencies when false claims spread across several platforms during a public demonstration. A claim about the resignation of a senior police official can affect public understanding of the department’s position, particularly when it is presented alongside protest-related content. In this case, the police response involved both a public clarification and a request for platform data.

According to the officials cited in the report, Delhi Police is continuing to monitor misleading posts on social-media platforms and is taking action against content that could create confusion among the public. The department’s request to X is intended to help identify the accounts behind the posts and determine their operating locations.

The police have not publicly established through the information available in the report whether the accounts were operated from Pakistan. That remains the subject of the data request and investigation. The next steps will depend on information provided by X and the other platforms where the content was posted.
