A 19-year-old woman died after being injured when the gate of a mixer ride broke at a fairground in Vikaspuri, West Delhi, prompting police to add a culpable negligence-related death charge against the ride operator. The incident took place at the Dussehra Ground in F Block, where two people were injured, according to Jagran – New Delhi.
The woman, identified as Gudiya, died late at night while undergoing treatment. She had been taken to hospital after the ride accident, along with another injured person. The report said both injured people were receiving treatment at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital before the latest development.
Following the death, police registered a case against the operator under the provision relating to death caused by negligence and began investigating the circumstances of the accident. The inquiry will examine the ride’s safety arrangements and the reasons the gate broke while it was in operation.
Police will also investigate the timing of the ride’s operation. Permission for the fair reportedly allowed it to remain open until 11 pm, but the ride was operating until 1:36 am. The authorities are examining how it continued to run beyond the permitted hours and whether the operating conditions complied with the approval granted for the event.
The accident has placed attention on safety controls at temporary fairs, where mechanically operated rides are installed for limited periods in public grounds. In this case, investigators are expected to establish whether the ride had the required safety arrangements, who was responsible for its operation and supervision, and whether the late-night operation had been authorised.
The police investigation will determine the sequence of events leading to the gate failure and the responsibilities of the operator and other parties connected with the fair. The case was initially registered after the accident, with the death-related negligence charge added after the injured woman died during treatment.
The latest police action follows an earlier report of the Vikaspuri ride accident in which two people were injured after the mixer ride gate broke. The investigation into the ride’s safety arrangements, the accident’s cause and its operation beyond the permitted closing time is continuing.
