A 13-kilometre traffic jam formed on the Delhi-Jaipur National Highway, or NH-48, from the Gurugram border towards Delhi on Wednesday after a damaged stretch on Delhi’s Rao Tula Ram Flyover disrupted traffic heading from Jaipur towards the capital.
The congestion has affected vehicles travelling from Gurugram to Delhi, with commuters facing significant delays. Gurugram Traffic Police issued an advisory asking motorists to avoid the affected movement wherever possible and use seven alternative routes.
According to the advisory, the damaged road section is located on the Rao Tula Ram Flyover near Vasant Kunj. Traffic moving towards Vasant Vihar has been diverted towards Dhaula Kuan. The disruption has made the Gurugram-Delhi section of NH-48 particularly vulnerable to spillback, as traffic approaching the flyover is being redirected through other corridors.
The first suggested option is to continue on NH-48 towards Mahipalpur, but the traffic police said this route should be used only by vehicles carrying passengers to the airport. For other Delhi-bound motorists, the advisory lists routes through the Narsinghpur cloverleaf and Dwarka Expressway, followed by Urban Extension Road-II.
Another option takes vehicles from the Narsinghpur cloverleaf to the Southern Peripheral Road, Ghatta T-point, Gwal Pahari, and the Mandi border. The advisory also suggests travelling through MG Road, using the IFFCO Chowk-MG Road-Aya Nagar Border and Bandhwari Toll route.
The remaining alternatives include the Rajiv Chowk-Sohna-Ballabhgarh route; the Rajokri Flyover and Urban Extension Road-II; and the Udyog Vihar-Urban Extension Road-II corridor. Motorists using these routes may face changing traffic conditions as vehicles are redistributed away from NH-48.
The incident highlights the operational dependence between Gurugram’s arterial road network and entry points into south-west Delhi. A road failure at a single flyover can affect traffic far beyond the immediate location because NH-48 carries large volumes of daily commuter, airport and freight movement between the two urban regions.
The Gurugram Traffic Police advisory remains the immediate official guidance for motorists travelling towards Delhi. Drivers have been asked to select an alternative route based on their destination, with Mahipalpur restricted in the advisory to airport-bound traffic.
