Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has announced that all vacancies in the Telangana Police Department will be filled by 2028, while directing officials to increase the ex-gratia payment for Home Guards who die in service from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.

Reddy made the announcements while addressing a Police Commemoration Day gathering in Hyderabad. He instructed Director General of Police CV Anand to take the necessary measures to raise the compensation for Home Guards who lose their lives while performing their duties.

The Chief Minister said the government had already issued a notification to fill 5,000 vacancies in the Police Department and remained committed to filling all vacant posts in the police wing by 2028. He also described the recruitment of 112 Deputy Superintendents of Police as unprecedented in the history of Telangana.

The staffing announcement comes alongside a series of measures aimed at strengthening policing and widening the department’s responsibilities. Reddy said the government was using modern technology to respond to emerging challenges, while maintaining a human-centric approach in policing. He also called on police personnel to handle cases involving women and children with greater sensitivity and ensure there was no delay in delivering justice to victims.

The Chief Minister said women’s safety could not be treated as the responsibility of the police alone and appealed to society to share responsibility for preventing violence and supporting women. He referred to SHE Teams, the Stand With Her initiative and Spandana, described as a set of Immediate Protection Teams intended to provide rapid protection to women and children during emergencies.

Reddy also raised concerns about drug abuse among young people and praised the Eagle Force for efforts to curb drug trafficking. He said maintaining law and order was crucial for the state’s development and that strengthening the police force remained a priority for the government.

The government has also introduced measures involving representation and welfare within the department. The Chief Minister said transgender people were being appointed as traffic assistants, while the Young India Police School had been established to provide educational opportunities for the children of police personnel, from Home Guards to the rank of DGP.

The announced changes include higher compensation for police personnel who die in service. Ex-gratia for Head Constables and Assistant Sub-Inspectors has been increased from Rs 45 lakh to Rs 1 crore. For Sub-Inspectors, it has risen from Rs 45 lakh to Rs 1.25 crore, while compensation for Inspectors has increased from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1.25 crore. The amount for officers of the rank of DSP and Additional SP is Rs 1.50 crore, and compensation for SP and IPS officers has been enhanced to Rs 2 crore from Rs 1 crore.

Reddy said the revised compensation was intended not merely as financial assistance but as a gesture of respect towards the families of police personnel who died in service. During the commemoration, he paid tribute to police personnel including Dev Singh, Pramod Kumar and Gajula Soumya, who were remembered for sacrificing their lives while on duty.

The immediate administrative steps are the recruitment process for the 5,000 notified vacancies and action by the DGP’s office on the revised Home Guard ex-gratia. The government has set 2028 as the deadline for filling all police vacancies.
