Mumbai Security Review Ordered After Tiger Shroff Attack

Mumbai security review involving police protection outside a film star’s residence

The Maharashtra government has ordered a review of security arrangements for film personalities following the reported attack on actor Tiger Shroff’s car, with special attention to actors who have received repeated threats or are considered close to Salman Khan, Navbharat Times – Mumbai reported on October 20.

According to a Maharashtra Home Ministry official quoted by the publication, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis spoke to the Mumbai Police Commissioner and directed the force to reassess protection for film personalities facing continuing threats. The review follows the October 18 incident involving Tiger Shroff, which the report described as a direct attack on his car.

The official said the incident was being treated seriously because previous attacks had mainly involved firing outside the homes of film personalities, while the latest reported incident targeted a vehicle directly. The official also said the government had begun work to prevent criminal gangs from expanding their influence in Mumbai.

The Home Ministry is considering the creation of a separate wing within the Intelligence Department to monitor threats against film personalities, politicians and other VIPs. A decision on establishing the proposed unit could be taken in the coming days, according to the official cited in the report. The proposed arrangement would focus on threat monitoring and security coordination for people identified as potential targets.

The security review follows earlier incidents cited by the report, including firing outside Salman Khan’s Galaxy Apartments and outside the residence of filmmaker Rohit Shetty. The report also referred to continuing extortion demands and death threats received by several artists. It did not provide a government-issued list of individuals whose protection will be reassessed or details of any revised security classifications.

Security for private individuals in Maharashtra is determined through a threat-assessment process overseen by the Home Department. The Protection and Security Wing of the Mumbai Police examines the case, while the State Intelligence Department or another relevant branch may assess the threat. Factors considered can include threat letters, intelligence reports, previous incidents and the current nature of the risk, according to the report.

The assessment is then submitted to senior police authorities, including the Joint Commissioner of Police in charge of law and order or higher officials. Security is approved after the assessment process, and protection may be increased, reduced or withdrawn when the threat level changes. The report said security arrangements are not permanent and are reviewed periodically.

The reported decision places the issue within a wider law-and-order response involving the Mumbai Police, the State Intelligence Department and the Maharashtra Home Department. The next formal step is the review of security for film personalities and other threatened individuals, while the government considers whether to establish a dedicated intelligence wing.
