The Batasingaram flyover accident injured 15 passengers after an RTC bus travelling from Khammam to Hyderabad rammed into a cement lorry from behind near Abdullapurmet in the early hours of Monday. Two women suffered fractures, while the other injured passengers sustained minor cuts and bruises, according to Abdullapurmet police.
The collision occurred at around 3 am as the bus was entering the flyover. Police said none of the injured passengers was reported to be in a serious condition. The bus was carrying passengers towards Hyderabad when it struck the lorry.
Bandaru Thirupathamma, 65, and Duggi Laxmi, 38, were among those injured. Both women were travelling with family members, including two children. Thirupathamma suffered fractures to both legs, while Laxmi sustained fractures to her right wrist and collarbone.
The two women were undergoing treatment at Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad. The remaining passengers who sustained minor injuries were also attended to following the crash. The available details did not indicate that any child travelling with the families suffered serious injuries.
Abdullapurmet police said they suspected overspeeding may have caused the accident. The police have registered a non-fatal road accident case and begun further investigation into the circumstances leading to the collision.
The incident places attention on the risks faced by passengers and other road users at night on a flyover carrying intercity traffic. However, the police investigation will determine whether speed, visibility, road conditions, vehicle movement or other factors contributed to the bus striking the cement lorry. No final cause has been established at this stage.
The crash also illustrates the immediate consequences of collisions involving public transport: multiple passengers can be injured in a single impact, requiring coordinated police, emergency and hospital responses. In this case, the most serious reported injuries were fractures suffered by the two women, while no passenger was reported to be in critical condition.
Police proceedings remain underway. The non-fatal road accident case will form the basis for further investigation into the bus’s movement, the lorry’s position and the events leading up to the collision on the Batasingaram flyover.
