Mira-Bhayandar Water Cut Brings Weekly Supply Shutdowns

Mira-Bhayandar water cut affecting municipal water supply in Mumbai Metropolitan Region

Mira-Bhayandar will face a 10 per cent water cut, with weekly supply shutdowns through the STEM Water Distribution and Infrastructure Company and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, as the civic body moves to preserve available reserves until August 31, 2027.

The Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) said the decision was taken in accordance with government directives and concerns over water availability. The civic body said the measure is intended to help ensure that water stock in Vaarvi Dam lasts through the stated period and to prevent a shortage in the coming months.

According to an MBMC notice dated October 18 and issued by City Engineer Deepak Khobragade, water supplied through STEM will be suspended every week from 9 am on Wednesday until 3 am on Thursday. This will result in an 18-hour shutdown during the weekly supply cycle.

Supply through MIDC will be suspended from midnight on Thursday until noon on Saturday, resulting in a 36-hour shutdown. MBMC warned that water supply to Mira-Bhayandar would be reduced and delayed following the scheduled interruptions by STEM and MIDC.

The municipality said below-normal post-monsoon rainfall, the influence of El Niño and the early withdrawal of the monsoon in October 2026 had raised concerns over water availability in the coming year. The civic body said the planned reduction was intended to manage the existing water stock and avoid a potential shortage in the months ahead.

Mira-Bhayandar receives water from both STEM and MIDC, making the schedules of the two suppliers central to the availability and timing of municipal supply. The planned shutdowns mean that residents may face reduced or delayed water availability during the interruption periods and immediately after supply resumes.

MBMC has urged residents to use water judiciously and cooperate with the civic administration while the restrictions remain in force. It has also advised residents to plan their water use around the weekly shutdowns, particularly during and immediately after the scheduled interruptions.

The decision comes amid wider concerns over water availability in Maharashtra. The state government has advised civic bodies to plan water supplies until August 31, 2027. Mumbai has also announced a 10 per cent water cut as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation seeks to manage its reserves amid concerns over rainfall and the impact of El Niño.

For Mira-Bhayandar, the immediate operational issue will be managing supply across the two weekly shutdown windows while maintaining distribution to residents. MBMC’s notice sets out the interruption periods and the conservation objective, but the supplied announcement does not specify an end date for the weekly shutdown schedule beyond the broader reserve-planning horizon of August 31, 2027.
