Pune’s Ganeshkhind Road and Baner Road works have come under official scrutiny after the Pune Municipal Corporation expressed dissatisfaction with incomplete construction, uneven road surfaces, deteriorated dividers and traffic-safety problems linked to ongoing metro-related work. The civic administration has ordered improvements ahead of the Pune Grand Tour cycling event scheduled for January.
The review covered road development works along Metro Line 3 between the District Court and Balewadi. Senior officials discussed the quality of work, the condition of central dividers, traffic management and road safety on Ganeshkhind and Baner roads. The administration directed the agencies involved to rectify deficiencies and maintain better construction standards.
PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said Ganeshkhind Road forms part of the Pune Grand Tour route and that metro construction in the area had created inconvenience. He said the road was not level and the dividers were in poor condition, and instructed the concerned agencies to complete the work quickly while ensuring quality.
The central dividers and remaining works along the approximately 4.5-kilometre Pune Grand Tour route must be completed by November 30, 2026, according to the directions issued at the meeting. Remaining works and required improvements on Ganeshkhind and Baner roads have been given a deadline of December 31, 2026.
The directions apply to road works being handled in connection with Metro Line 3, which is being developed along the District Court-Balewadi corridor. The meeting also reviewed traffic arrangements and safety measures around active construction zones, where road-level differences, barricades and construction material have affected movement.
A joint working group comprising the PMC road department, PMRDA, Tata Projects and the traffic police is to be formed to monitor pending works. The group will review progress regularly and submit weekly reports to senior officials. The arrangement places the municipal road department and the agencies executing or supervising the work within a single monitoring process.
The administration has also ordered the removal of debris, surplus construction material and obstructions from footpaths on the route between Sancheti Hospital and Balewadi. Unnecessary materials, barricades and signboards at locations where work has been completed are to be removed within one week.
The meeting further called for improvements at pedestrian facilities, cycle routes, important junctions and U-turn locations. The stated objective is to make the affected roads safer and restore them to a better condition while the remaining metro-linked road works continue.
The immediate milestones are the one-week deadline for clearing unnecessary site material and barricades, the November 30 deadline for works on the cycling event route, and the December 31 deadline for remaining works and improvements on Ganeshkhind and Baner roads. Weekly reviews by the proposed joint working group are expected to track compliance.
