A Rewa pond drowning killed two construction workers from Uttar Pradesh who had entered the water to bathe in Chaura village on Monday, police said. The men, identified as Shadab Khan, 20, and Nadir Khan, 22, were working on a water tank construction project in the village when they drowned.
The incident took place under the jurisdiction of Semaria police station in Rewa district. Khan and Nadir were residents of Kukra village in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh, according to police and the report.
Police said four labourers had gone to the pond. While two of them were washing clothes, Shadab and Nadir entered the water to bathe. The two men slipped into deeper water and drowned, while the other two labourers managed to escape.
The pond was being used by the workers during their stay in the village, where they had travelled for employment on the water tank construction project. The account provided by police does not indicate that the workers were undertaking any construction activity at the pond when the drowning occurred.
Rescue operations were launched after the incident was reported. The bodies of both men were subsequently recovered, Semaria police station in-charge Shiva Agarwal said.
The deaths involve workers who had travelled across state lines for construction employment and were living or working in a rural setting connected to a public water infrastructure project. The available account does not provide details about the pond’s depth, whether warning signs or barriers were present, or the precise circumstances in which the two men entered the deeper water.
Police said further action is being taken in connection with the incident. No additional details about the investigation or the arrangements for the recovered bodies were provided in the report.
