Chorbagan Stampede: Nine Injured Discharged as 3 Remain Critical

Chorbagan stampede victims receiving treatment at a Kolkata hospital

Nine people injured in the Chorbagan puja pandal stampede have been discharged from a private hospital on Kolkata’s EM Bypass, while three critically injured patients remain under close medical observation. The incident had killed 19 people and injured 25 others during Saptami celebrations.

The nine patients were discharged on Monday after the hospital completed the required paperwork, according to hospital sources cited in the report. Two more patients are expected to be discharged on Tuesday, subject to their medical condition and doctors’ advice.

Patients admitted to the intensive treatment unit, intensive care unit and special intensive care unit will not be discharged immediately. Three critically injured patients continue to receive treatment, with doctors monitoring their health closely. If their condition improves, they may be released by Wednesday or Thursday, the hospital sources said.

The injured were initially admitted to Kolkata Medical College and Hospital after the stampede. Twelve people were being treated there, while two others were admitted to SSKM Hospital. All 14 injured patients were later shifted to the private hospital on the EM Bypass for further treatment.

The hospital’s list of injured patients includes eight women and six men. The patients were identified as Ranbir Singh, Amanpreet Sidhu, Ananya Das, Sumit Kumar Ghosh, Srija Pal, Drishyani Sarkar, Ankan Ghosh, Brishti Dey, Saroj Devi, Kunas Haldar, Aishiki Roy, Rajesh Kumar Srivastava, Manna Yadav and Parna Nath.

The stampede occurred at the Chorbagan puja mandap during Saptami night, when heavy rain affected north and central Kolkata. The rainfall contributed to traffic congestion on surrounding roads and increased the number of people gathering at the pandal, according to information cited in the report.

Witnesses said several people waiting in queues attempted to move inside the mandap to escape the rain. Pushing began as the crowd pressed forward. Several people fell on a circular passage inside the pandal, and the pressure from people behind them created a crushing situation.

The incident highlights the immediate safety challenges created when heavy rain, traffic disruption and large festival crowds converge at a temporary public venue. The latest hospital update concerns only the condition and discharge of the injured; the reported death toll remains 19, with 25 people injured in the stampede.

The remaining patients will be discharged in stages based on their recovery and the advice of treating doctors. The hospital is expected to review the condition of the critically injured patients over the next few days.
