Durgapur road accident scene on a city road at night with motorcycles and emergency response

A Durgapur road accident killed a 16-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man after two motorcycles collided head-on near Kumarmangalam Park late on Sunday night, while two other riders suffered serious injuries.

The crash took place on the road connecting Kumarmangalam Park and the I Sector crossing under Durgapur police station limits. According to police information cited by Sangbad Pratidin – Bengal, four people were out to visit Durga Puja pandals when the two motorcycles collided.

The deceased have been identified as Anirban Chakraborty, 16, a resident of Durgapur’s 54 Feet area, and Sahil Sharma, 22, who lived in Benachity. The collision occurred late at night as festival crowds were visiting pandals across the city.

Local residents helped recover the injured people and arranged for them to be taken to hospital. All four were initially transported to the Durgapur Steel Plant hospital. Anirban Chakraborty died while undergoing treatment there, according to the report.

The three remaining riders were later moved to a private hospital in Durgapur. Doctors declared Sahil Sharma dead at the facility. The other two injured people remained under treatment in serious condition, the report said.

The crash occurred during a period of increased movement on Durgapur’s roads, with residents travelling between neighbourhoods and festival venues late into the night. The deaths have brought renewed attention to road safety during major public events, when two-wheelers and pedestrians share busy urban routes.

The exact circumstances of the head-on collision, including how the two motorcycles entered the same path, are being investigated by Durgapur police. The report did not provide details about the riders’ helmet use, vehicle speeds, road lighting or whether any traffic-control arrangements were in place at the location.

Dibyendu Gain, general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Durgapur East No. 1 organisational unit, said the accident occurred late on Sunday night and that people had taken all four riders to hospital. He appealed to motorists to follow traffic rules and wear helmets while riding motorcycles. The police investigation is continuing.
