Kolkata Pandal Crowd Crush Kills Woman, Exposes Safety Gaps

Crowd gathering near a Kolkata Durga Puja pandal during heavy rain

A woman from Kumartuli reportedly died after a crowd surge at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata during heavy rain on Saptami evening, according to a report by Sanmarg. The incident occurred as devotees tried to move through the pandal’s entrance amid rising pressure between people seeking shelter from the rain inside and those attempting to leave.

The woman had arrived at the pandal with her 25-year-old son, Sonu Pal, to offer prayers. Pal told Sanmarg that the situation became unmanageable within a short time after heavy rain began. People already inside the pandal reportedly avoided going out, while devotees outside tried to enter to escape the downpour. The resulting pressure at the entrance caused people to fall over one another, according to his account.

Pal said he was also trapped under the crowd but managed to get out. When he reached his mother, he found that she had died. “I may not have survived either,” he was quoted as saying. His account describes a sudden crowd-control emergency in a confined public venue during one of the busiest periods of the Durga Puja celebrations.

The report said the woman was a resident of Kumartuli, but it did not provide her name. Sanmarg also reported that the incident has prompted questions about the arrangements for managing visitors at the pandal, including the separation of entry and exit routes, public announcements and the availability of emergency assistance.

Some eyewitnesses and local residents alleged that announcements about movement through the pandal were inadequate, leaving visitors confused as crowd pressure increased. They also alleged that police presence inside the pandal was insufficient and that officers were mainly visible near a VIP entrance. These claims have not been independently verified in the supplied report.

The report further carried complaints that immediate administrative assistance and transport for injured people were not available quickly enough. The supplied account does not establish the number of injured visitors or confirm whether any official emergency response review has been completed.

The incident has renewed attention on the safety systems required at large festival venues, where high footfall, temporary structures, narrow circulation areas and sudden weather changes can quickly affect crowd movement. Entry and exit planning, visible emergency routes, police deployment, medical support and clear communication are central to managing such gatherings.

Sanmarg said the precise cause of the death and whether there were lapses in crowd or safety management would become clear only after an official investigation. No finding by an investigating authority was included in the supplied report.
