Ahmedabad is set to receive a dedicated Vande Bharat maintenance hub at Sabarmati, enabling major repairs and scheduled overhauls of the semi-high-speed trainsets to be carried out locally. The Rs 307 crore facility is being developed under Phase II of the Sabarmati Integrated Coaching Depot by Western Railway’s Ahmedabad division.
The project will bring several maintenance functions under one location instead of requiring trainsets to be sent to other facilities for major work. According to the report cited in the Economic Times coverage, the hub is being planned to support the maintenance requirements of 24-coach Vande Bharat trainsets.
The facility will include dedicated sheds for heavy repairs, wheel maintenance and the overhaul of major mechanical and electrical equipment. Its scope will extend beyond routine servicing, allowing railway staff to undertake more complex interventions at Sabarmati.
The proposed hub is designed to handle scheduled SS-I maintenance for up to 12 trainsets a year, or SS-II maintenance for up to eight trainsets annually. These capacities indicate that the facility is being planned for structured maintenance cycles as the Vande Bharat network expands.
Vande Bharat trainsets require different levels of scheduled maintenance, ranging from regular inspections to more extensive overhauls of components and systems. Bringing heavy repairs, wheel and axle work, and electrical equipment maintenance together could allow the railway division to manage these activities within the same depot ecosystem.
The project also adds a new layer to Sabarmati’s role in Western Railway’s coaching and train operations. The existing depot is being expanded through its second phase, with the Vande Bharat facility forming a specialised component of that development.
The maintenance hub’s operational importance will depend on its ability to support train availability while handling the technical requirements of newer trainsets. The planned sheds and equipment areas are intended to give railway personnel a wider range of maintenance capabilities at Ahmedabad rather than limiting the location to routine servicing.
The facility is being developed as the Vande Bharat network continues to grow, although the supplied report does not specify a commissioning date or provide details of the construction timeline. Further project milestones will determine when the Sabarmati hub becomes operational.
