Mysuru Reopens Sayyajirao Road Subway With New Safety Measures

Mysuru Sayyajirao Road subway reopened with CCTV and improved pedestrian safety measures

Mysuru City Corporation has reopened the Sayyajirao Road pedestrian subway after a safety review, restoring an underground crossing on one of the city’s busiest roads and adding CCTV cameras, waste bins and interior artwork. The facility is intended to provide pedestrians with a safer alternative to crossing the road at surface level.

The subway, which was built nearly a decade ago, had remained closed for an extended period because of safety concerns. It was opened temporarily during Mysuru Dasara in 2025, but was not in regular public use until the latest review by the civic body.

MCC commissioner MK Savita inspected the facility and reviewed the safety arrangements before it was reopened. The corporation has said that the measures are aimed at improving security, cleanliness and the overall usability of the crossing.

Sayyajirao Road carries heavy vehicular traffic, with movement increasing considerably during Mysuru Dasara and other major public events. The volume and intensity of traffic can make it difficult for pedestrians to cross the road safely, particularly when residents, shoppers and visitors are moving through the area at the same time.

The reopening is expected to support pedestrian movement and reduce the need for people to cross the busy road directly. MCC also expects the subway to help maintain smoother traffic flow by separating pedestrian crossings from vehicles at the road surface.

The civic body has appealed to residents and visitors to use the subway rather than cross the road at unsafe points. It has also asked users to keep the facility clean and protect the artwork, CCTV equipment and other amenities installed as part of the reopening.

The facility’s operation will be particularly relevant during festivals and public events, when increased pedestrian and vehicle movement places additional pressure on road crossings. The corporation’s appeal to citizens indicates that continued public use and upkeep will be central to ensuring that the reopened subway remains functional.
