Kolkata Crowd Restrictions Tightened After Chorbagan Disaster, 7 Arrested

Kolkata crowd restrictions near the Chorbagan puja venue with police securing central Kolkata roads

Kolkata Police have imposed a three-day restriction on gatherings of five or more people around the Chorbagan puja venue and adjoining roads after a serious incident, while seven people have been arrested in the investigation, according to a report by Sangbad Pratidin.

The restriction covers roads around Chorbagan in central Kolkata, including stretches linking College Street, Kolutola Street, Chittaranjan Avenue and Eden Hospital Road. The police order applies to the area under Bowbazar police station and is intended to prevent gatherings near the puja venue during the immediate security response.

According to the report, the restriction extends from Kolutola Street near College Street to Eden Hospital Road, along the corresponding stretch of Chittaranjan Avenue, and across sections of Kolutola Street and Eden Hospital Road connecting College Street and C R Avenue. Kolkata Police have also deployed additional personnel in the area.

The arrests followed a suo motu case registered by Girish Park police after the incident. The report says the case includes multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to the alleged circumstances of the incident, including provisions described as involving culpable homicide and conspiracy. The investigation is being conducted by Kolkata Police.

Those arrested have been identified as Rajkumar Sewda, also known as Raja, Shantanu Dubey, Biplab Mukhopadhyay, Kaushik Saha, Pintu Dey, Suman Chakraborty and Rajesh Pal. Sewda and Dubey were identified in the report as the secretary and vice-president of the Chorbagan puja committee.

Mukhopadhyay was responsible for installing the bamboo structure, while Saha and Dey were assigned crowd-control and VIP-pass checking duties, according to the report. Chakraborty and Pal were identified as officials of a private security agency. The arrests followed questioning of several puja organisers and others detained after the incident.

The source report describes the event as a serious disaster but does not provide details of the incident itself, including the number of people affected, the precise cause or the nature of the injuries. Those details remain important for establishing how the venue, temporary structures, crowd movement and security arrangements contributed to the situation.

The police restrictions indicate that authorities are treating the area as a live investigation and public-order zone. For residents, commuters and visitors, the order means that movement and access around the listed roads may be affected during the three-day period, while gatherings near the puja venue are prohibited under the police direction.

The immediate next steps are the continuation of the police investigation, examination of the roles of the organisers, structure-installation personnel and private security officials, and enforcement of the gathering restrictions around Chorbagan.
