Cyberabad Traffic Police apprehended 320 motorists during a special drunk-driving enforcement drive conducted over the weekend, with two-wheeler riders accounting for the largest share of those detained. The action comes alongside the disposal of 196 drunk-driving cases by courts between October 12 and 17.
Of the 320 motorists apprehended, 265 were riding two-wheelers, 16 were driving three-wheelers, 38 were driving cars and one was operating a heavy vehicle, according to Cyberabad Traffic Police officials. The distribution highlights the scale of enforcement across different vehicle categories in the Cyberabad area, where private two-wheelers form a significant part of daily urban travel.
Blood alcohol concentration tests recorded varying levels among the offenders. Police said 266 motorists had BAC levels ranging from 36 mg/100 ml to 200 mg/100 ml. Another 38 recorded levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml, while 16 had levels ranging from 301 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml.
All 320 offenders will be produced before the court, officials said. The police warned that driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence and reiterated that motorists involved in fatal crashes could face more severe criminal action.
According to the officials, drivers who operate vehicles in an inebriated condition and cause fatal accidents would face charges under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The provision carries a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison and a fine, police said.
The latest enforcement drive follows the disposal of 196 drunk-driving cases by courts between October 12 and 17. Of these, 191 offenders were fined, while five were ordered to pay fines and perform community service. No offender during that period was sentenced to both a fine and imprisonment, according to the police information cited in the report.
The figures show how drunk-driving enforcement in the region involves both roadside detection and subsequent court processing. The immediate police action identifies motorists through BAC testing, while the courts determine the penalties and any additional conditions imposed on offenders.
The concentration of apprehensions among two-wheeler riders also reflects the importance of enforcement among motorcyclists and scooter users. However, the operation covered cars, three-wheelers and a heavy vehicle as well, indicating that the drive was not limited to a single class of road users.
Cyberabad Traffic Police have warned motorists against driving after consuming alcohol and said that fatal crashes linked to intoxicated driving would attract stronger legal consequences. The 320 apprehended motorists are to be produced before the court for further proceedings.
