The death toll in the Kolkata pandal stampede has risen to 19, with at least 25 people injured after a crowd surge at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata on Saturday evening. Investigators are examining crowd movement, security arrangements, public announcements and heavy rainfall as they establish how the crush occurred.
The incident took place at the popular venue on Muktarambabu Street, where large numbers of visitors had gathered during the Durga Puja celebrations. The sudden movement of people caused a fatal crowd crush, prompting rescue and relief operations and an investigation into the arrangements in and around the pandal.
West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party president Samik Bhattacharya said preliminary information from an Assistant Commissioner of Police present at the scene indicated that an announcement followed by repeated whistles from a private security agency may have contributed to the rush. Bhattacharya cautioned that investigators must establish the sequence of events before any conclusion is reached.
According to the report, members of the puja organising committee and employees of the private security agency have been detained while authorities examine the circumstances leading to the stampede. Investigators are expected to assess whether instructions issued to visitors, announcements made at the venue or the actions of security personnel contributed to confusion or panic.
Heavy rainfall and congestion near the pandal are also being examined as possible contributing factors. Witness accounts cited in subsequent reports have raised concerns about the movement of visitors and confusion around entry and exit routes. Police are examining whether the combination of crowded conditions, rainfall and sudden movement created the circumstances for the fatal surge.
The investigation will also have to establish how visitors were being channelled through the venue and whether entry and exit routes remained sufficiently separated during the peak crowd. The role of private security personnel, the placement of announcements and the response to changing crowd density are among the issues under scrutiny. The available account does not establish that any single factor caused the incident.
Bhattacharya said the investigation should remain transparent and urged political parties to avoid accusations while it is under way. He also called for support for bereaved families and for anyone found responsible for lapses to be dealt with under the law.
Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda expressed condolences to the families of those killed and said local authorities were conducting rescue and relief operations. Former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Union Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also expressed grief over the deaths and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The West Bengal government has announced financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh and a government job for the family of each person killed in the incident. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced a fact-finding investigation into the tragedy. Authorities are continuing to examine the crowd-control arrangements and the sequence of events at the pandal.
