A 12-tonne steel reinforcement cage being prepared for the under-construction Anand Nagar-Saket elevated road collapsed onto a moving car on Mumbai’s Eastern Express Highway near the Kopri railway bridge on Saturday afternoon, prompting the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to impose a Rs 2-crore penalty on the contractor and order an investigation.
The incident took place at around 2pm on the Mumbai-bound carriageway, a heavily used traffic corridor in the Thane-Mumbai region. The steel cage was intended to form part of a pier for the elevated road project when it buckled and fell towards passing traffic.
According to eyewitnesses cited by the Times of India, a loud creaking sound was heard before the structure gave way. The reinforcement cage struck a passing sedan, ripping open part of its roof and smashing the windshield. The driver and a female passenger narrowly escaped. The driver told the media that he initially thought a stone had fallen and stopped immediately after the impact. He reported minor head injuries, while the passenger also sustained minor injuries that did not require medical treatment.
MMRDA, which is executing the project through a contractor, said that no injuries had been reported. Naupada police officials contacted the driver, who declined to file a complaint, and a station diary entry was made, according to the report.
The collapse has brought construction safety into focus on a road where vehicles continue to move alongside major infrastructure work. The Eastern Express Highway carries substantial daily traffic, increasing the potential consequences of a failure involving heavy reinforcement material or temporary construction arrangements. The available report does not establish the precise cause of the collapse.
Following the incident, MMRDA announced the Rs 2-crore penalty and directed that a detailed investigation be conducted. The authority said in a statement that it viewed the incident with “utmost seriousness” and that such incidents were unacceptable. It added that any lapse in construction safety would not be tolerated and that corrective measures would be enforced to prevent a recurrence.
The Anand Nagar-Saket elevated road is among the infrastructure works being carried out in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to improve movement through congested road corridors. The incident will now place attention on how construction zones are secured while live traffic is maintained beside heavy civil works, including the handling, lifting and temporary support of large reinforcement assemblies.
The episode also follows a quality issue reported at the Kasarwadavli flyover, which was shut a year after its inauguration, according to the report. That earlier episode had already raised concerns about the quality of infrastructure delivered in the region. MMRDA’s investigation into the steel-cage collapse is expected to determine the immediate cause and identify the corrective measures required at the project site.
