A car overturned on Undri Road near The Corinthians Club on Saturday morning, prompting residents to renew demands for urgent reconstruction of the stretch between Nyati Estate and Punekar Chowk in Pune. Residents have cited multiple cracks, rising traffic and the movement of heavy vehicles as growing safety concerns on the road.
The incident has brought renewed attention to the deteriorating condition of the corridor, which serves a rapidly developing part of Undri. Residents told Punekar News that routine repairs had failed to resolve the underlying problems and urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to expedite a full reconstruction of the road.
The stretch is used by a growing number of commuters as residential complexes and commercial establishments expand in the area. Residents said infrastructure improvements had not kept pace with this growth, leaving road users to navigate a surface they described as increasingly problematic.
Heavy vehicles, including ready-mix concrete trucks and water tankers, have emerged as an additional concern. Residents have asked the PMC and Pune Traffic Police to take action against speeding and other unsafe driving practices on the route. They also alleged that some motorists use mobile phones while driving, increasing risks for other road users.
The residents’ demand is not limited to resurfacing. They are seeking reconstruction of the stretch between Nyati Estate and Punekar Chowk, along with a definite timeline for the work. They have also called for an effective traffic management plan during construction so that road closures or diversions do not create further disruption for commuters.
During an earlier visit to the area, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishor Ram had assured residents that the road would be reconstructed. Residents are now seeking clarity on when the project will begin and want the civic body to initiate the work without further delay.
