Three people, including a couple and a biker, were killed and two others seriously injured after two cars allegedly racing each other crashed into vehicles on Kalyani Expressway near Barrackpore in the early hours of Saturday, police and local sources said. The crash took place near Barrackpore Wireless More and Ambagan, where one of the cars overturned after hitting a stationary motorcycle.
According to police, a Hyundai Verna and a Mahindra Thar were travelling from Sodepur towards Naihati at high speed when their drivers allegedly lost control. The vehicles rammed into three to four vehicles parked along the roadside, while a bike was also crushed in the collision. The impact left the vehicles badly damaged, police said.
Arindam Goswami, 39, and Sangeeta Guha Goswami, 33, a couple living near Airport Gate No. 3, were in the car that overturned and died in the crash. Vishal Sharma, a biker from Maheshtala in Kolkata, was also killed. Two other motorcycle riders sustained serious injuries and were taken to Barrackpore’s BN Bose Sub-Divisional Hospital.
Police and rescue personnel reached the site after the collision and began rescue operations. The three victims were declared dead at the hospital, according to the report. The condition of the two injured riders was not provided in the available account.
A local trader told the newspaper that the two cars had been racing when their drivers lost control near Wireless More. The other car involved in the alleged race fled the spot immediately after the crash, a senior officer of the Barrackpore Commissionerate said. Police are searching for the vehicle.
The crash has renewed concerns about speeding on Kalyani Expressway, particularly during the night and early-morning hours when traffic is relatively light. Local residents alleged that some motorists use the wide, less-congested road to drive at dangerous speeds. The allegations were reported in the context of the latest crash and were not independently verified in the available material.
A traffic police officer said cameras monitor speed limits during the day and fines are imposed on violators. The officer also said the incident had brought the need for regular night-time and early-morning surveillance, stricter action against speeding motorists and greater public awareness back into focus.
The report said four people had died in separate high-speed accidents on Kalyani Expressway over the preceding two to three days. It also noted heightened concern among residents ahead of the Durga Puja season, when vehicle movement and public travel typically increase. Police continue to search for the car that fled the crash site.
