Telangana FMG Interns Rally for Stipend Parity and Dues

Telangana FMG interns rallying through Hyderabad for stipend parity and release of dues

Foreign medical graduate (FMG) interns and house surgeons from across Telangana held a rally in Hyderabad from Jalavihar to People’s Plaza, pressing the state and central authorities to address their demands over stipend parity, unpaid dues and internship conditions.

The interns said eligible FMG interns should receive a monthly stipend of ₹29,792, matching the amount paid to Indian Medical Graduates (IMGs). They also sought the release of stipend dues pending from January, calculated at the parity rate.

Their third demand was protection from what they described as unfair internship extensions or punitive action for taking part in peaceful protests. The demand places the terms of medical internships at the centre of the dispute, alongside the question of whether foreign-trained medical graduates are being treated on equal financial terms with their Indian-trained counterparts.

The rally moved from Jalavihar towards People’s Plaza in Hyderabad. The participants used the demonstration to draw attention to the conditions faced by FMG interns and to seek intervention from the Union Health Ministry.

FMG interns, described in the report as foreign medical graduates or house surgeons, are seeking parity with Indian Medical Graduates on the stipend issue. Their demand includes both a monthly payment of ₹29,792 for eligible interns and retrospective clearance of dues from January at the same rate.

The dispute also includes concerns about the consequences of participating in protests. The interns have asked that they not face internship extensions or punitive measures because they joined peaceful demonstrations. This makes the issue broader than the immediate payment demand, covering the administrative conditions under which their internships are completed.

The interns appealed to the Health Ministry to intervene and address all three demands. The report did not provide details of any response from the Telangana government, medical institutions or the ministry, nor did it specify a timeline for resolving the stipend and internship-related concerns.

The next step sought by the protesting interns is intervention by the Health Ministry on stipend parity, pending payments and protection against punitive action linked to peaceful protest participation.
