A woman was killed and her husband was critically injured after a speeding SUV allegedly rammed their motorcycle near Amistapur village in Bhoothpur municipality, close to Mahbubnagar, late on Friday night. Police arrested the SUV driver, identified as Nithin, a 22-year-old third-year medical student.
The crash took place at around 1 am near UPS School, when Mohammed Shakir, his wife Shahana Begum, 40, and their five-year-old daughter Ayara were travelling by motorcycle to Mahbubnagar to attend a relative’s wedding. Police said the SUV was approaching from the Bhoothpur side when it hit the two-wheeler from behind.
The impact threw all three members of the family onto the road. Shahana died at the spot, while Shakir suffered multiple fractures to his arms and legs. His condition remained critical, according to the report. Shakir and Ayara were taken to the Mahbubnagar district general hospital. The child sustained minor injuries.
Bhoothpur circle inspector S Rama Krishna said two SUVs carrying six government medical students from Mahbubnagar had been travelling at high speed when the collision occurred. Police confirmed that the vehicles were overspeeding, but said there was no evidence so far that the students were racing. The students had been returning after attending a function and were not found to be under the influence of alcohol, the inspector said.
The case has also raised questions about what happened immediately after the crash. Local residents who witnessed the incident told police that occupants of the SUV involved in the collision allegedly tried to leave by boarding the second vehicle after abandoning the damaged SUV. Residents chased them and stopped them before alerting the police.
Bhoothpur police reached the spot after receiving the alert and registered a case. The victims were identified as Mohammed Shakir, a tailor from Amistapur, Shahana Begum and their daughter Ayara. The crash occurred on a local road connecting Bhoothpur and Mahbubnagar, placing a family travelling for a social function in the path of a speeding vehicle during the early-morning hours.
Police are continuing the investigation to establish the exact circumstances of the collision and determine the role of the occupants of both SUVs. The investigation will also establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged attempt to leave the scene after the crash.
