Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Reserve Bank of India’s greenfield Data Centre and Enterprise Computing & Cybersecurity Training Institute at Info Valley-II near Bhubaneswar on October 25, according to official sources cited in a preparatory meeting chaired by Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg.
The integrated facility, spread across 18.55 acres, is designed to strengthen the RBI’s data management, disaster recovery and cybersecurity capabilities. It will function as a critical backup to the central bank’s primary data centre in Navi Mumbai, supporting the continuity of key financial systems if the primary facility is disrupted.
The announcement followed a meeting to review arrangements for Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Odisha and President Droupadi Murmu’s scheduled state visit on October 28 and 29. The RBI facility is among the major projects included in the Prime Minister’s programme.
The foundation stone for the campus was laid on March 22, 2023, by then RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das. At the time, Das highlighted the expanding role of technology in central banking and the need to increase the RBI’s computing infrastructure and research capacity in areas including enterprise computing, cybersecurity and digital technologies.
The Bhubaneswar data centre has been planned with a location intended to reduce exposure to certain geopolitical and natural disaster risks. The site was selected away from high-risk border zones and seismically sensitive regions, according to the report. Its planned fault-tolerant architecture and multiple layers of redundancy are intended to support reliable operations and business continuity.
The project places Bhubaneswar within the RBI’s wider effort to protect the systems that underpin financial operations. As banking, payments and regulatory functions rely increasingly on digital infrastructure, the ability to maintain access to data and computing systems during a disruption is a central operational requirement for financial institutions.
The campus will also house the Enterprise Computing & Cybersecurity Training Institute. The institute is intended to support research, capacity building and skill development in emerging technology domains, alongside the operational role of the data centre.
The facility’s inauguration will mark the next formal milestone for a project that combines backup computing capacity with an institutional training and research function. Further operational details, including the facility’s commissioning arrangements and the scope of systems supported from Bhubaneswar, were not provided in the information available for the announcement.
