A 30-year-old motorcycle rider was killed and two others were injured in a road accident at the Urbana crossing in Kolkata early on October 17, after a black car collided with a motorcycle at the junction of Choubaga Road and Anandapur Road, according to police information reported by Bartaman Patrika.
The crash took place at around 4.20 am, when the motorcycle was travelling along Choubaga Road and turning left towards Anandapur Road. At the same time, the black car was moving along Anandapur Road and turning right, resulting in a collision at the intersection.
The motorcycle rider, identified as Pratyush Panai, suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital. Doctors declared him dead, the report said. The motorcycle’s occupants, identified as Prasun Kumar and Meghnath Saha, were also injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
The car driver allegedly left the vehicle at the scene and fled after the collision. Police have begun a search for the driver and are examining the circumstances that led to the crash. The black car and motorcycle involved in the accident have been taken to the police station for investigation and safety, according to the report.
The preliminary police inquiry found that the motorcycle rider and the people travelling with him were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident. Police also suspected that they may have been under the influence of alcohol, although the report did not state that this had been conclusively established.
The incident highlights the risks faced at urban road junctions during low-traffic early-morning hours, when turning vehicles and motorcycles can approach the same intersection from different directions. The available police account establishes the sequence under investigation but does not yet provide a final determination of responsibility.
Police are continuing efforts to locate the driver who allegedly abandoned the car. Investigators are also examining the vehicles and the circumstances surrounding the collision to establish the precise cause of the accident.
