Kolkata Police recorded 410 cases for alleged traffic-rule violations on Sashthi night of Durga Puja, with 65 people arrested and 85 vehicles seized as enforcement was intensified across the city. The action targeted dangerous driving, drunk driving and other violations during the festival period.
The police data, released by Lalbazar, showed that 189 people were booked for allegedly carrying three people on a motorcycle. Sixty-five people faced cases for allegedly driving cars or motorcycles recklessly, while 61 were booked on allegations of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Police also registered 95 cases for other traffic violations and seized 2.4 litres of alcohol during the night. No case was recorded for riding without a helmet, according to the figures released by the Kolkata Police.
The enforcement followed increased surveillance from Panchami night, when the city began seeing large-scale movement of visitors and vehicles for Durga Puja. Police said the measures were intended to prevent reckless movement of cars and motorcycles and reduce road-safety risks during the festival.
The Sashthi figure was higher than the enforcement count recorded on Panchami night. Police had reported 334 cases on Panchami, along with 28 arrests. The rise on Sashthi came as night-time festival activity continued across Kolkata and traffic monitoring remained tightened.
The police figures cover several separate categories of alleged violations, including triple-riding on motorcycles, dangerous driving, drunk driving and other offences. The release did not provide a location-wise breakdown of the cases or details of penalties imposed in each matter.
Kolkata Police’s festival enforcement is continuing through the Durga Puja period. The published figures indicate that drunk driving and unsafe motorcycle use remained among the principal violations recorded during the first two nights of the city’s heightened traffic surveillance.
