Delhi-NCR to Stay Dry as IMD Warns of Heavy Southern Rain

Delhi weather forecast showing dry NCR skies while heavy rain affects southern India

Delhi-NCR is likely to remain dry on Sunday, October 18, even as the India Meteorological Department forecasts very heavy rainfall in isolated parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, along with thunderstorms and gusty winds across several southern states.

The IMD’s seven-day forecast indicates dry weather across Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Uttarakhand may receive isolated to scattered rainfall, while no significant weather is expected over most other parts of north India.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are likely to see very heavy showers at isolated places on Sunday. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds of 40-50 kmph are expected in the region, with gusts potentially reaching 60 kmph. The IMD has forecast the wet spell to continue through October 22, with isolated heavy rainfall also likely on October 21 and 22.

Andhra Pradesh is also likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema may continue to receive rain over the coming days, while strong surface winds are possible at isolated locations.

Heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places in Kerala and Mahe, coastal Karnataka and south interior Karnataka. Thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 30-40 kmph are expected over Kerala, Mahe and interior Karnataka. Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely over Kerala and south interior Karnataka in the coming days, with widespread showers also expected over coastal Karnataka.

Thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 30-40 kmph may affect isolated parts of Telangana. The IMD has also forecast isolated thunderstorms over Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, coastal Karnataka and Odisha.

The weather agency warned that heavy rain and gusty winds could disrupt road and rail traffic, reduce visibility and cause localised waterlogging or flooding in low-lying areas. Strong winds may damage vulnerable structures and uproot small trees. People have been advised to monitor weather updates, avoid taking shelter under trees during lightning and move to safer locations if conditions deteriorate.
